K-citymarket in järvenpää, Finland: a combination of a grocery store and a restaurant world led by top chef Matti Jämsen
The K-Citymarket in Järvenpää is a compact hypermarket in a town of 45,000 citizens. It offers a unique fusion of the restaurant world and the grocery store. A similar concept is not in such a large scale in Finland before. The project is being developed by Markku Hautala.
K-Citymarket is a modern Finnish hypermarket that offers its customers a wide variety of food and consumer goods and it’s known for its best deals, local selections and food expertise.
From K-Citymarket you can get almost everything your family needs with one shopping trip. Its diverse range of foods – especially high-quality fresh produce, fruits and vegetables – is its strength.
As Markku Hautala told: “The aim is not to sell you as much as possible. The aim is that you wish to come again”.
The store boasts bespoke lighting, canvas canopies, digital screens, some nice hand-designed overheads as well as some green vertical wall-style décor to give a sense of freshness.
Compared to other hypermarkets, the height of the shelves has been reduced, top-stocking is not deployed, and the aisles have been chopped in half in terms of length. Combined with the fact that product and category adjacencies are top of mind, the end result is one of total shopper-centricity and a store that is a joy to navigate and shop.
Between the dedicated sections let’s find: a very charming bakery operated by Finnish bakery and confectionery supplier Fazer, an excellent fresh fish counter, a meat section composed of a prep room with state-of-the-art machinery and a front display case to show the cuts of meat and the JUICE corner which offers a wonderful array of juicing options, including the pineapple juicing machine, the only one in Finland.
The jewel in the crown in this store is the sushi counter, with a simple and linear design in true Japan’s style. Under the watchful eye of a Japanese sushi master with 15 years of experience, the proposition is of the highest quality at the lowest prices; this is why the sushi counter in K-Citymarket Järvenpää is one of the biggest sushi sellers in Europe, producing between 800 and 1000 kg per week. Its uniqueness is import specific Japanese rice to prepare the best product.
