The concept of luxury always changes. We had anticipated this by talking about temporary restaurants and spontaneity suites, two formats in which the idea of luxury overcomes the purely material aspects by moving towards psychological factors, such as the exclusivity of experience. Today we will talk about the luxury circumscribed to the environment protagonist in the hotel: the room.
When one thinks of how to make the hotel room luxurious, the imagination can only run immediately towards an environment distinguished by noble materials, velvets, mirrors and gilding. But today, in the age of internet and globalization, are these stereotypes still relevant? Does living in luxury mean being surrounded by precious objects or enjoying pleasant situations, not necessarily very expensive?
Designing the hotel room today can not ignore a careful ergonomic study to arrange the furnishings and equip them with modern devices, but if we want to create a welcoming and luxurious environment we must ensure that the complex can also create emotions. As? We asked a design expert, Cesare Francolini, owner of Afa Arredamenti.
Cesare, what are the hotel’s customers looking for today? How can we make them feel immediately at home in a room that is not at home?
The hotel rooms today must thrill. The customer wants to bring home a memory, something “distinctive” that allows him to remember that particular environment over time. For this reason it is always necessary to give the best both in the service and in the offer.
The expectation of potential guests is clearly different from person to person and from place to place: a structure located in a city, frequented mainly by a business clientele, will necessarily have certain peculiarities different from a structure that accommodates its customers in a place holiday.
I will give you an example: a hotel in the center of Milan, the Italian capital of design and economy, will have to offer rooms in line with the dynamic spirit of the city and that reflect the distinct status of the guests. The interior design will therefore be directed to a rational furnishing, preferring a few accessories that highlight the quality of the materials and minimalist but refined details (such as the vertical cut of light that defines the headboard of this bed).

Otherwise, the guests of a relais of a city of art appreciate more a timeless environment, with furnishings of essential lines and materials of the highest quality. For example, for a hotel in Florence, Eden Rock, we have chosen a particular furnishing but without excessive pomp.
5 WAYS TO MAKE THE HOTEL ROOM LUXURIOUS
Let’s see at this point the strategies to be used to set up rooms that affect customers and make them feel surrounded by an elegant and comfortable environment:
1. The color of the walls
A room in which the colors are well chosen immediately fascinates, at first glance. The decision is difficult, the options are mainly two: dark and intense colors or soft and sober tones. The colors that help to add charm and make the hotel room luxurious are the light and natural ones, like beige, white, hazelnut or cream. However, the choice is strictly connected to the characteristics of the structure and above all to its brand identity. Today there are also many fantasies, such as the striped one used at the Hotel Vistamare in Cesenatico in the wall above the bed.
2. The choice of furnishings
In most hotel rooms lack the details necessary to really bring that touch of elegance to the environment. Always black and gold are the colors that identify luxury, a golden element in the room can change the appearance of the environment creating an elegant and refined atmosphere. On the condition that it is not too much: if you like it, just add a frame, a mirror or a golden table. If instead you find the pacchiano gold, you can replace it with equally luxurious but less demanding colors, like silver or chromed steel. These colors reflect light and make the room more luxurious without weighing it down.
Regarding the fabrics of furniture, bedspreads or curtains, never choose shades that are too different from the color of the walls. Make sure they are of similar gradations or complementary colors.
3. Accessories & Co.
An accessory with which you can indulge the cushions: in addition to making the room comfortable, if chosen with taste the cushions can really help to raise the feeling of a luxury environment. Positioned on the bed or on an armchair, they are able to make the environment original, with an absolutely negligible expense, with the priceless advantage of being able to change them whenever you want.
For the more minimalist rooms, plain-colored cushions will be needed, as the multicolor versions do not fit this style of furniture. On the contrary, the hotels furnished in vintage style or shabby chic are suitable for cushions of different sizes, colors and shapes, which give the atmosphere an aged atmosphere that many find welcoming. In any case, be careful not to exceed: the focal point of the room remains the bed, which should not drown under an excessive pile of cushions.
If the walls of the room seem too empty, you can add some paintings, but without exaggerating in number and size. In the hotel they go for the greatest landscapes, animals, flowers or other natural elements (even here it depends on the image of your hotel).
4. Games of light
Brightness immediately gives elegance and simplicity to a room. Buy floor lamps, table lamps and chandeliers, generating more sources of light in the same environment. The right lighting will give warmth even to the simplest hotel rooms.
If you have the possibility – this option is in fact a bit ‘less economical – prefer natural light through large windows, which create continuity between the interior space and the external environment and give a feeling of greater space. Also take into account the curtains: the options here are really endless, what matters is that these also integrate perfectly with the rest of the room and that they are well made. In general, too bright colors are not recommended, which tend to weigh down the atmosphere. It is a good idea to hang the curtains as high as possible, in order to visually fill the space and make the hotel room luxurious.
5. The elegance of flowers
They are cheap, they smell and make the environment more beautiful. It seems trivial, but a bouquet of flowers or a beautiful plant is the magic touch to create the most luxurious of atmospheres. If you decide to buy them, place them in matching pots with everything else and above all remember to treat them!
You might not even apply all these tips to make it, but it’s not a problem. The important thing is that you can draw inspiration for new ideas and put them into practice with care. The results will come by itself. And they will surprise you.
